  1. ** MAGICK 4 -- ELEMENTS AND FORCES **

  3.         The Ancients divided the world into four basic
  4. principles or *elements* -- earth, water, fire, and air.
  5. That viewpoint has mostly changed with advances of science,
  6. but the four elements are still accepted in magick, for they
  7. are more closely linked with the emotions than modern
  8. explanations of the world. Many occultists think of the magical
  9. elements as forces, or as *qualities* of energy; especially
  10. within the astral world. Each element has a symbol and color.
  11. (Common symbols are -- fire: a triangle pointing up; air:
  12. a triangle pointing up and with a horizontal line through the
  13. middle of it; water: a triangle pointing down; earth: a
  14. triangle pointing down and with a horizontal line through the
  15. middle of it.) Colors of the elements are -- earth: brown and
  16. green; water: blue; fire: red; air: yellow...The Eastern
  17. tattvic system uses different symbols and colors. The elements
  18. are often used in magick ritual.
  19.         Magick sees relationships between things. These
  20. relationships are called 'correspondences'. Although magical
  21. correspondences are not literally equal to one another, you can
  22. think of them that way (such as gold equals sun). Tables of
  23. these relationships, called 'Correspondence Tables', are
  24. available (an important one is Crowley's '777'). Thus one thing
  25. or symbol can be used to suggest another. This is important in
  26. magick, for the magician may surround himself with as many
  27. appropriate correspondences as he can to vividly affect the
  28. senses; thus making his magical contact with the inner planes
  29. more lucid.
  30.         The magical elements have correspondences with the
  31. tarrot cards as the four suits. The four quarters (directions
  32. of the universe as used in magick ritual) and the Archangels
  33. also correspond with these same elements --

  44. ELEMENTALS
  45.  
  46.         The magical elements are said to be peopled by spirits
  47. and mythological entities called elementals or nature spirits.
  48. These are grouped into four main categories --

  50. Gnome (earth)   Undine (water)  Salamander (fire)  Sylph (air)

  61.         Elementals are usually only visible to those with
  62. clairvoyant sight and are more likely to be seen at night in
  63. the mountains or country away from cities -- especially if you
  64. are tired or sleepy. Although elementals exist naturally, it is
  65. also possible to create one which will exist for a limited time
  66. -- no elemental has immortality. A created elemental is called
  67. an 'artificial elemental'.
  68.         To the Ancients, elementals were the physical
  69. explanation of the universe. However, some contemporary
  70. occultists see them only as symbols for forces and otherwise
  71. not 'real' at all. Another word sometimes used for elemental is
  72. 'familiar' (usually in medieval witchcraft); the term is
  73. ambiguous, as it might merely be an ordinary household pet such
  74. as a dog or cat.

  79.         Chinese philosophy and acupuncture talk of yin yang.
  80. This is the idea of polarity, or opposite pairs, as shown --

  96. The list could go on. In Chinese literature it is quite long.
  97. Some occultists suggest everything can be similarly arranged
  98. into related opposite pairs.

  101. SIMPLE MAGICK
  102.  
  103.         Here is a simple magical technique you may wish to
  104. try. It is a variation of affirmation, which was discussed
  105. in an earlier lesson...To help to you achieve your goal
  106. (magical or otherwise), find a word or short phase which sums
  107. up what it is that you want to accomplish. Write the word (or
  108. phrase) down 10 times each day until you achieve success.
